Personal Care Aide

The Personal care aides (PCAs) provide essential supports and services that enable older adults and individuals with disabilities to reside safely in their homes and participate in their communities. This 41-hour program is taught with a combination of lecture, and hands-on practical lab exercises.

Personal Care Aide (PCA)

Duties and Responsibilities:

Each PCA will be expected to perform the following:

  • Home management tasks including housekeeping, laundry, shopping and errands.
  • Prepare and serve simple modified diets according to instruction and assist with feeding as necessary.
  • Provides health care tasks, personal hygiene services, housekeeping tasks and other related support services essential to the consumer’s health.
  • Observes, records and reports all changes to supervisor. All PCA’s must demonstrate competence in performing the necessary skills and only perform those skills on the plan of care.

Nurse Aide to Home Health Aide

The BRAMSTEIN SCHOOL OF APPLIED STUDIES offers a training program for Nurse Aides who wish to become Certified Home Health Aides. This is an intensive and comprehensive course that includes lab skills training, classroom sessions, and hands-on clinical experience.

Personal Care Aide to Home Health Aide

We help students learn about their future roles as home health aides when they will be tasked to care for patients in hospitals, nursing homes or private homes. We also teach our students effective time management and proper documentation methods when caring for their patients. This 67-hour course also includes an 8-hour clinical externship.

The course covers patient care fundamentals such as:

Home Health Aide

Home Health Aide

The Home Health Aide is an 83-hour program designed to prepare students for work in caring for individual withint he confinement of their home. This program is taught with a combination through lecture, DVDs, role-playing, and classroom lab practice; students learn procedural skills such as vital signs, bathing, dressing and positioning. The classroom is equipped with hospital beds and medical equipment to practice skills prior to the 8-hour clinical externship rotation.

Nurse Aide Assistant

Nurse aides or nurse assistants render patient care through the performance of routine tasks. They usually fulfill their duties under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Nurse Aide / Assistant

The Nurse Assistant program is designed student with knowledge and skills necessary to perform basic health care skills. It prepares you to function in the role of nurse assistant under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The course curriculum meets the requirements of the NYS Education Department. You will need to successfully demonstrate the patient care skills mandated, complete the 100 hours of classrooms lectures/lab and 25 hours of clinical rotations at a medical facility or long term care settings. Additionally, you will receive 10 contact hours of Vocational Math and Career Development to further your skills.

Successful completion of the course which is comprised of theory, lab, and clinical is required to be eligible to take the Prometric NYS CNA Competency Exam.

Nature of Work: Nursing assistants can perform routine tasks for caring for patients. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the duties might include: aiding patients to transfer in and out of the bed, wheelchair, walking, performing range of motion exercises with bed ridden patients, bed bathing, shaving, oral hygiene, taking temperatures, vital signs and blood pressures, feeding, changing bed linens and maintaining safety and cleanliness in the patient’s general surroundings. The practice of good hygiene and hand washing is expected at all times in the clinical setting.

Certified Nursing Assistant yo Home Health Aide

The Nursing Assistant-to-Home Health Aide program is designed to prepare students for work in caring for individual within the confinement of their home.

Certified Nursing Assistant to Home Health Aide

This 67-hour program is taught with a combination of lecture, hands-on practical lab exercises, and real-world clinical experience conducted off-campus at an actual patient home site.

A Home Health Aide must be able to understand patients, understand directions, make them clearly understood, and be able to cope with physically demanding and stressful situations. The program places a high emphasis on learning excellent communications skills and the Art of Caregiving to provide compassionate care for people in the health care system; share many common tasks – both care for patients, with a focus on the patients’ daily living needs, and work under the supervision of physicians or nurses. Through lecture, DVDs, role-playing, and laboratory practice, students learn procedural skills such as vital signs, bathing, dressing, and positioning. The classroom is equipped with hospital beds and medical equipment to practice skills prior to clinical rotation.

Required Attendance

In order to be effectively and adequately evaluated and to meet state requirement, students must be present for all required clinical performance hours and theory class.

Nurse Aide Advanced

The Nurse Aide Advanced program of Bramstein School of Applied Studies is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to become nurse aides. At the same time, we also prepare them for entry into a practical nursing program if they wish to proceed.

Nurse Aide Advanced (Nurse Technician)

Course Description

This program is designed for students who wish to fully to empower themselves as a full healthcare technician. This BPSS approved course provides an opportunity to gain the additional competencies and clinical experiences needed to seek employment in a hospital or in a resident health care facility, sub-acute care facility, or a hospital. The Nurse Aide Advanced certificate is designed to not only prepare one as a nurse aide, but to prepare students for entry into a practical nursing program by requiring additional courses in anatomy, mathematics, and English. These courses also promote a greater understanding of one’s patients and allow the nurse aide to function more fully as a member of a health care team.

Nurse Aide Exam Prep

Nursing Assistant Exam Review & Prep (Refresher)

This course is a review of the Nursing Assistant course. It is for those who have completed an approved-training program that lapsed for 2-years and are listed on the New York State Nurse Aide Registry, but have not worked in a New York State nursing homes for at least 7 hours in the past 12 months; those who have not taken the exam certification; or individuals who have taken and failed the NYS Prometric Certification; or out-of-state certified nurse aide.

Upon completion, student can retake the Prometric Nurse Aide exam skills and written certification exam.

Patitient Care Technician

Bramstein School of Applied Studies is offering Patient Care Technician program to those who envision themselves providing acute and long-term patient care.

Patient Care Technician (PCT)

Course Description

The Patient Care Technician program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills to prepare students for employment in the healthcare field including both acute and long-term patient care. The program of study focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses the understanding and demonstration of proper and accurate use of required nursing equipment. This BPSS approved course provides an opportunity to gain the additional competencies and clinical experiences needed to seek employment in a hospital. Additional instructions in these specialized areas include EKG and Phlebotomy. Job opportunities include, but are not limited to EKG / Phlebotomy Tech, and Emergency Tech. The student must successfully complete all state approved PC Technician course to be awarded a diploma.

Patient Care Technician graduates can expect to find employment opportunities in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and placement agencies. To obtain your Patient Care Technician certificate, you must have a current CNA certified certificate.

Phlebotomist-EKG Technician

At Bramstein School of Applied Studies, we equip students who are aspiring to become EKG technicians and phlebotomists with the required skills to know the proper and safe procedures for fulfilling their professional functions. We educate and train our students with the standard precautions involved in these particular disciplines.

Phlebotomy Technician

Course Description

This course provides phlebotomy instruction to the student with a working knowledge of collecting blood while emphasizing patient safety, quality assurance, universal and standard precautions. The program of study focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses the understanding and demonstration of the proper and accurate use of required phlebotomy equipment. This BPSS-approved course provides an opportunity to gain the additional competencies and in-house lab skills experiences needed to seek employment as a phlebotomist. The student must successfully complete all state-approved Phlebotomy Technician course to be awarded a diploma.

This non-credit course is designed to prepare an individual to perform venipuncture puncture for diagnostic procedures. Students who complete this program will be prepared to take NHA’s Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam as well as other national certification exams.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of phlebotomists are projected to grow 27 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform blood work.


EKG Technician

EKG technicians make use of an electrocardiogram (EKG) equipment to monitor and test the cardiovascular rhythm of a patient. Through such equipment, the EKG technicians are able to record and monitor the electrical impulses that the heart transmits.

Course Description

EKG also known as electrocardiogram technician – monitors and tests patient cardiovascular rhythm using EKG equipment. This 90-hour program will prepare you to become an EKG technician, which involves monitoring and recording electrical impulses transmitted by the heart. The course includes hands-on labs and practice with EKG equipment, and prepares you to take the National Certification exams.

Additionally, you will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands-on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine and other clinical practices. After the successful completion of this program, you will be prepared to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) EKG Technician Certification (CET) exam.

As the baby boomer population ages, the need for EKG technicians will continue to grow, and as medical imaging technology advances, hospitals and labs will replace more currently invasive procedures with less invasive, more affordable imaging options.

Central Sterile Technician

Central Sterile Processing Technician

The Central Sterile Processing Technician Certificate 780-hour program will prepare you to work on a team that maintains sterilization of all instrumentation and equipment – an essential part to uphold patient safety. Skills covered include how to decontaminate, prepare and sterilize instrument trays for surgical procedures, disinfect patient care equipment and the various methods of inventory control storage and distribution of sterile supplies and equipment.

Upon successful completion, you can sit for the EXAM to become a Certified Sterile Technician CSPT offered by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA). Students completing this program could easily articulate into Surgical Technology. This program requires a 400-hour externship.

Hemodialysis Technician

Hemodialysis Technician

The Dialysis Technician is a multi-skilled health care worker who works with patients, oversees assembling the machine, making sure it is in working order and ensuring it is sterile. The technician checks a patient’s chart, administers local anesthesia and inserts the needle, starting dialysis according to the prescription. During dialysis, the technician checks the anticoagulant and fluid rates and adjusts them as needed. The patient must be in the proper position and the technician must respond to any alarms or emergencies. After dialysis, the technician must respond to any alarms or emergencies. After dialysis, the technician disconnects the machine and cleans it, and records a patient’s vital signs. Other technicians may work only with machines, not with patients directly.

This 805-hour program prepares students to work in hospitals, but many works in hospital dialysis unit or at dialysis centers. Dialysis technicians, especially, may work in home dialysis programs or industry. Sterility is important, so technicians are expected to follow proper procedures. Medical technicians generally work full-time and may be expected to work evenings or weekends. Teamwork is an important value, no matter the environment.

This program is taught with a combination of lecture, hands-on practical lab exercises, and real-world clinical experience conducted off-campus at dialysis facility. This program is designed to prepare Dialysis Technicians (D-Tech) to function as multi-skilled care providers in a variety of health-care settings and to increase employers’ abilities to meet their workforce needs. The technician will receive education on standard and universal health care precautions, therapeutic communication techniques, English and math skills, customer service, patient care delivery systems, current technology usage, and Occupational Therapy safety.

Additionally, students will have the benefit of being exposed to the training of Phlebotomy, and EKG courses within the program, which can provide a strong foundation for becoming a Dialysis Technician.

Bramstein School of Applied Studies’ Dialysis Technician Certificate Program is approved by the New York State Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision. A 120-hour externship is required. Completers of this program are eligible to sit for the BONENT, CCHT, or CCNT Certification exam at an additional cost payable to these exam sites.
